Start: San SebastiánFinish: Irun
From San Sebastián we will head towards Lezo, which we will cross when going towards Pasajes San Juan and, then, take road GI-3440 that runs along Jaizkibel Mountain. This coastal mountain in the Northeast of Gipuzkoa is a good observation point from which we can peacefully see both the Gulf of Biscay and the villages beside it. Some country houses and the remains of past military customs are its most characteristic features.
Going down to Hondarribia we will stop at the Guadalupe hermitage, where a figure of the Virgin Mary has been worshipped from the 16th Century and we can enjoy nice scenery over Txingudi Bay. Hondarribia is a village usually crowded over summer and, nevertheless, interesting for the rest of the year because of its accommodation and gastronomy offer. Its new yachting harbour has changed the physiognomy of its beach. It is still a pleasure to run along the breakwater and the paseo Butrón, from which one can see the bay. The Marina neighbourhood, with colourful fishermen houses, restaurants and bars is the core of festive life. On the other hand the old part, walled up entirely, has been declared national monument and dazzles due to its number of emblazoned houses or spots, such as the castle of Emperor Carlos V, nowadays Parador Nacional (luxury hotel).
Irun has seen many conflicts and wars due to its bordering location. However, nowadays it is a commercial city and an important communications centre with Europe. Likewise, the Santa Elena Museum-Hermitage is worth a visit because preserves still the remains of a roman necropolis, and so is Ficoba, the newly opened fair that goes beyond the limits of this country.
