Start: SodupeFinish: Valle de Carranza
The BI-636 road that departs from Bilbao and goes through Sodupe will lead us to Güenes, where we will stop to pay a visit to the Parish Church of Santa María that has an interesting flamboyant Gothic front. Very close to Güeñes, in Zalla, we can have a walk in the gardens of the Baroque palace of the Murga family, which has been turned into the town hall, or drop by Terreros Tower.
Go on the BI-636 road and we will get to the beautiful borough of Balmaseda, which is the most populated town in the Encartaciones and renowned for its Easter processions. The emblematic Puente Viejo Bridge also known as La Muza Bridge, where in old times a customs point used to be located, and the Church of San Severino, built in Gothic style with added Baroque elements, stand out within the medieval layout.
Heading north through the BI-630 and BI-2701 roads, the Assembly House of Avellaneda in Sopuerta will be our next stop. The remains of the 14th century tower have been incorporated into Las Encartaciones Museum. Back to the BI-630 road, go through Villaverde de Trucios and going up the Escrita Pass we will gain access to Carranza valley. Down the pass, we can turn off and go up to see the hermitage of Buen Suceso, situated next to a couple of farmhouses, some open fields, and an amazing bullring built in the middle of the mountains.
We return to the BI-630 road where another deviation will allow us the opportunity to become acquainted with Karpin Abentura, Bizkaia's ecological park, which works on native fauna recovery. The area has been extended by adding a dinosaur park. Carranza valley consists of many neighbourhoods spread around a natural environment. The Ranero neighbourhood, where Pozalagua Cave is located, is worth a visit. It is a huge natural cave that catches visitors' attention due to the large number of stalactites, which defy gravity by forming fanciful shapes.
