It’s hard to find a more exciting way to start a day’s walk than the departure from Markina-Xemein. First you’ll see the idyllic town of Bolibar, and a little further on, a religious monument unique to Bizkaia – the Collegiate Church of Ziortza. This church has been witness to pilgrims on their way to Santiago for over nine centuries. You’ll pass through the Gorontzugarai woods before returning to the more populated valleys and villages on your way to the historic town of Gernika. This stage alternates flat and hilly stretches, and short distances between towns. In both Munitibar and Zarra, you’ll come across fountains and roadside cafés where you can fill your water bottle and exchange a few words with the locals. The Assembly House and the historic Oak of Gernika are the best possible reward for today’s effort.
