Did you know that in ancient Rome there were only two seasons a year?
One was very short and was the equivalent of winter. The other, longer one included the spring, summer and autumn months and was called “primo vere”, which means "first summer", and developed into the word "primavera", which now means spring in different modern European languages.
In spring the weather starts to get better, the days get longer, we like to spend more time outdoors and, above all, to make plans with those we love the most to enjoy this time of year. We therefore offer you three fantastic options to enjoy with all the family this May - read on and find ideas!
Discover a traditional farmhouse
A great option to try with all the family could be a visit to the Igartubeiti farmhouse museum, in the country locality of Ezkio-Itsaso. Igartubeiti was built in the mid-16th century and is a magnificent example of the golden age of the Basque farmhouse. Its interior has been converted into a museum recreating what life was really like in old farmhouses.
Also, this spring sees the opening of the exhibition "The World Painted in 4 Colours" about Basque cookery, which sets out to explain the values of Basque gastronomic culture. You can find out more about this culture through its history, traditions, leading figures, gastronomic landscape, ingredients and recipes. The exhibition is accompanied by a range of activities aimed at families with children.
Family adventure
Another fun activity with the family is one that takes place amid the flysch rock formations on the Bizkaia coast. It's called Geotxiki, and it's a kind of fun geo-treasure hunt in which, as well as learning about geology, you'll enjoy a great new activity for all the family.
It's aimed at all audiences, an experience specially designed for groups or families with children aged five and over. The smallest members of the family will enjoy the experience of learning and interacting with their surroundings and using tools that, while simple, add a lot to the learning.
Millenarian salt workings
The most fun activities are the ones where you can learn about something by putting it into practice, and the Salt Valley is the perfect place to learn by doing. In the locality of Añana in the province of Araba, its programme of family workshops is the ideal way to spend an unusual day and at the same time learn about a trade with a long, long history.
You'll get to know a unique landscape in which the whole family can learn some interesting facts about food, palaeontology, geology and traditional trades in our ancient salt workings.
The Basque Country is a top-quality landmark destination for families. Here you'll find a place packed with things to do and places to discover. It boasts a varied, balanced, high-quality range of things for visitors to do and see throughout the region. Thanks to the Family Tourism Club, families can try all kinds of things to do around the Basque Country.
