Cultural Heritage

Portugalete's old part, together with the Bizkaia Bridge, is one of the most appealing spots in the village. A historic-artistic compound that keeps its medieval essence.

The basilica of Santa María towers above the Old Part, a sanctuary that mingles Gothic and Renaissance styles. Beside it we will find the Salazar Family's Tower, built in 1379 and belonging to the homonym lineage, well known in Bizkaia's history.

The visitor will also enjoy the convent of Santa Clara, where its Renaissance-Plateresque belfry stands out. At the end of the 19th century and in the early 20th century, Bilbao's bourgeoisie bought its second residence in Portugalete, as can be seen in the old part's little palaces.
